December
2 - St. Francis DeSales Preview
December 4, 2009 11:00am
Massillon Paul Brown Tiger Stadium
OHSAA Division: III
Conference: Columbus Central Catholic - Silver
Offensive Formation: Multiple (pro, wing)
Defensive Set: 4-3
2009 Record: 11-3
Record Vs Mooney: 0-1
Last Meeting: Week 2 of 2009 (CM-21 SFD-14)
Head Coach: Ryan Wiggins (37-5 at DeSales, 41-11 overall)
OHSAA State Finalist:
1984, 1990, 1996, 2001, 2005 and 2009
OHSAA State
Champions: 1985, 1997 and 1998
The
Cardinals will once again face the Stallions of St. Francis DeSales
High School in the OHSAA Division III State Championship. After
starting the season at 2-2, the Stallions have won 10 of their next
11 games. In the playoffs, they defeated Bryan by a score of
45-21, Tipp City Tippecanoe by a score of 54-14, Columbus
Bishop Watterson by a score of 24-10, and Cincinnati Wyoming
by a score of 24-7. For the 2009 season, DeSales' losses
were to three playoff teams, Mooney, Cincinnati Elder, and Cincinnati
Anderson.
The
DeSales offense is geared toward the run, with frequent misdirection/option
plays being called. A group of agile lineman clears the way for a group
of talented backs, each with a different running style. The backfield
is led by seniors Adam Griffin (5-9, 180) (son of OSU great Archie Griffin)
and Robert Perrine (6-0, 190) and are joined by sophomore Warren Ball
(6-0, 180). Griffin is a better outside runner while Perrine can
work between the tackles. The quarterback is junior Nick Gentile
(6-0, 170) who has been the starter since week 8. He is the Stallions
leading rusher with nearly 1,200 yards and 14 touchdowns and runs the
option very well. He tends to keep the ball rather than pitch
it to a runner. The offensive line is the strength of the DeSales
offense, with senior guard Alex Vance (6-4, 225) and senior tackle Travis
Jackson (6-5, 265) heading up a group of agile, athletic linemen.
DeSales uses a wing formation and frequently runs misdirection plays
utilizing the wingback.
The
defensive unit of DeSales could possibly be one of the best in the
state. Several Division I recruits can be found on all levels
of the defense. Anchoring the line is Jackson, the Division
III Defensive Player of the Year, along with junior defensive end
Chris Rock (6-5, 245), who has nine sacks on the season and several
batted balls due to his height and long reach. Rock has
been a dominant force and can single handedly cause many problems
for an offense. The linebackers are led by seniors Malcolm Burrell
(5-10, 210), Evan Killilea (6-0, 200) and Chi Chi Ariguzo (6-3, 205).
They have combined for 10 sacks and over 200 tackles. The linebackers
move well in pursuit as well as stay disciplined when the situation
calls for it. Griffin is the most experienced member of the
Stallions defensive backfield.
Special teams are a source of pride for the DeSales football program,
and it shows. They have no glaring weakness in special teams.
Senior kicker Kyle Nugent (6-0, 180) has an accurate leg and has good
range. The return game is also excellent with Griffin primarily
handling the return duties.
This
game will mark the 18th state finals appearance for both teams combined.
Mooney is 6-3 and DeSales is 3-4 in State Championship games.
So much has changed for both teams over the past twelve weeks, the
previous meeting this season is essentially irrelevant.
State
Championship Breakfast Will Be Held on Friday
MooneyFootball.com
will once again host a pregame breakfast this Friday at the Stadium
Park Pavilion adjacent to Paul Brown Tiger Stadium around 8:30 am.
Coffee, hot chocolate, donuts, and many other breakfast items will

large fireplace in the pavilion so everyone can stay warm. In
past years, we have had a great turnout for this event. Many
alumni, parents, students and fans get together at the pavilion before
the game. Unfortunately, due to the time of the year, the restrooms
are not available at the pavilion, so please plan accordingly.
We would
also like to invite any DeSales fans to attend the breakfast.
Look for the signs in the parking lot directing you to the pavilion.
It is located on a hilltop northwest of the stadium.
An overhead map showing the location of the pavilion with relation
to the stadium is below. If you need any forther information

26 : Steubenville Preview
November
27, 2009 7:30pm
Canton Fawcett Stadium

OHSAA Division: III
Conference: OVAC
Offensive Formation: Multiple
Defensive Set: Odd
2009 Record: 12-1
Record Vs Mooney: 1-4
Previous Meeting: 2008 (CM-16 STU-28)
Head Coach: Reno Saccoccia (27th season at Steubenville, 283-48 overall)
OHSAA State Playoff
Champions: 1984, 2005, 2006
The
Cardinals will take on the Steubenville Big Red on Saturday in the
Division III State Semi-Final. The game will take place at
Canton Fawcett Stadium. Steubenville enters the game with
a 12-1 record, with their only defeat coming to Inkster High School
(MI) in Week 9 by a score of 36-29. Most recently, the Big
Red defeated Dover in the Division III Region 11 Final by a score
of 28-14. Mooney and Steubenville have one common opponent,
Poland Seminary. Mooney defeated Poland Seminary 24-7 while
Steubenville came out on top by a 24-13 margin.
Steubenville
will be the most balanced attack we will have faced this season.
Senior Dwight Macon (6-0, 200), the Steubenville QB, is arguably
the most complete quarterback we will come up against this season.
Macon has passed for over 1,500 yards with 15 touchdown passes.
He has rushed for nearly 700 yards and nine touchdowns. He
shows amazing poise and does not get rattled if no one is open,
he simply finds a running lane which forces defenders to cover the
entire field. The Big Red running game is bolstered by junior
Shaquille Petteway (6-1, 205) and sophomore JoJo Pierro (5-9, 170).
the two backs are a great combination of speed and power
and compliment each other very well. The receivers are led
by senior Trey Wiggins (5-10, 165) who is very elusive in the open
field. Steubenville has an experienced offensive line led
by juniors Mason Campbell (6-0, 250) and Willie Pruitt (6-3, 275).
The
Big Red defense has been stellar all season. They held Division
I State Semifinalist Massillon to three points in a 13-3 win!
They are giving up less than 80 yards per game on the ground this
season. The defensive line is led by junior Jamey DeVaul
(6-3, 220) who has 5 sacks on the year. The linebackers provide
excellent run support and move very quickly to the ball. Junior
linebacker Jesse Birden (6-0, 200) leads the team in tackles.
Petteway is also a leading tackler for the Big Red from his linebacker
position. The defensive backfield covers well and provides
good run support. Junior defensive back Jordan Meyer (5-11,
175) is an excellent cover corner. The Big Red defense is
very disciplined and is very opportunistic, with several forced
fumbles, stripped balls, and tackles for loss.
Head
Coach Reno Saccoccia is one of Ohio's best coaches, both past and
present. He has one of the highest winning percentages all-time
in Ohio history. Under Saccoccia, the Big Red have had only
one losing season (4-6) and have won three State Championships.
Aside from the obvious player matchups, possibly the most intriguing
matchup is that of the two coaching staffs in this game and their
ability to make in game adjustments.
The
game will be played at Fawcett Stadium in Canton, Ohio. Steubenville
played at Fawcett Stadium last week vs. Dover. It would be
wise to plan on arriving 30-45 minutes earlier than you normally
would. This game will draw a very large, spirited crowd, and
has the makings of one of the best games of the OHSAA Playoffs this
year.
The
winner of this game will play in the Division III State Championship
at Paul Brown Tiger Stadium in Massillon on Friday, December 4,
2009 against either Cincinnati Wyoming or Columbus St. Francis DeSales.
This game will be broadcast live on Sportstime Ohio, which is carried
by many cable systems throughout Ohio. Radio coverage will
be provided by 570 WKBN in Youngstown (where you can also listen
to the broadcast on their website www.570wkbn.com). For more
information on the Steubenville Big Red football progam, visit their
excellent website at www.rollredroll.com.

were both to playoff teams, Steubenville in week six by a score
of 24-13, and Canfield in week ten by a score of 16-0.
The
Poland offense is very diverse and can run and pass very effectively.
They are led by senior running back Luke Wollet (6-1, 195) who
is an excellent runner as well as a receiver out of the backfield.
He has rushed for over 1,000 yards and has scored 19 touchdowns
this season. He is joined in the backfield by sophomore
quarterback Colin Reardon (6-0, 180) who has thrown for nearly
1,500 yards to go with seven touchdown passes. his primary

Seniors Jordan Boyd (6-0, 285), David McLaughlin (6-3, 240), and
John Hughes (6-1, 190) are the most experienced of the group.
Poland mixes runs and passes very well. They can run their
offense out of any formation, so any tendencies are difficult
to detect. The Poland offense is averaging 27 points
per contest.
The
Bulldog defense has been solid all year. They are giving
up an average of just 11 points per game. The defensive
front is anchored by senior Shawn Agee (5-8, 270) along with sophomore
George Dibo (5-11, 242). Wollet plays linebacker also and
is joined by senior Brett Modic (6-3, 220). The secondary
is led by Patton, with senior Ed Kosec (6-1, 207) and junior Anthony
Machi (5-10, 160).
Patton
returns kickoffs and has two special teams touchdowns this year.
Poland's special teams often utilize trick plays, especially on
kickoffs including onside kicks as well as short kickoffs.
Senior kicker Kyle Filicky (5-9, 160) is accurate and has good
range. The punter is junior Chris Walla (5-10, 160).
The
winner of this game will be Regional Champions and will advance
to the State Semifinals.
A
very lagre crowd is expected for this game. Be sure to arrive
early in order to be able to park near the stadium.

The
Cardinals will play a former SVC member this week for the first
time in 30 years this Friday night in the Regional Semifinal of
the OHSAA Playoffs at Mollenkopf Stadium in Warren, Ohio.
The Hubbard Eagles finished in the #3 position in the Region 9
standings this season with an 9-1 record. Their only loss
was to Poland in week one of the season by a score of 27-15.
This is the third consecutive Playoff appearance for Hubbard under
third year head coach Brian Hoffman.
The
Hubbard offense is multi-faceted and runs the ball very well which
paves the way for their explosive passing attack. They are
stocked with several outstanding skill players. Senior quarterback
Matthew Shelton (6-3, 180) has good size and a strong arm.
He has thrown for over 1,700 yards this year, with twenty touchdowns
against only five interceptions. Joining him in the backfield
is senior Andre Givens (5-10, 185) and junior Blake Novotny (6-3,
205). They combine for a great combination of speed and
power running. Givens is a game breaker with an enormous
amount of talent. His elusiveness through the first and
second levels coupled with his blazing speed have resulted in
countless touchdown runs over 50 yards. He received several
college scholarship offers from Big Ten school before committing
to the University of Pittsburgh. The wideouts from Hubbard
are led by senior Kurtis Drummond (6-3, 190) who has big play
ability and can go up in traffic due to his height. He has
accepted a scholarship to attend Michigan State. Givens
is also an excellent receiver out of the backfield. Joining
Drummond are senior Tommy Jackson (6-2, 165) and sophomore Danny
Duval (5-10, 175). The offensive line is solid and experienced
and is led by senior Dom Dionosio (6-3, 270). The Eagle

scores coming in the 4th quarter when Hubbard had a large lead.

and is quick enough to get around offensive linemen in pass rush.
The linebackers are quick and play excellent run defense.
The defensive backs are led by junior Mike Lopuchvsky (6-1, 180),
Duval and Drummond. Drummond has had great success this
season blitzing from the corner position. The Hubbard
defense is allowing just over eight points per contest.
Lopuchvsky
is the kicker, Givens returns kicks and is always a threat to
return a kick for a touchdown.
The
winner of this game will play the winner of the Poland vs. Akron
Hoban game in the Region 9 Final on November 20, 2009.

On

Seniors Aaron Polasky (6-2, 180) and Zack Horovitz (6-2, 190)
are the main targets in the passing game. The offensive
line is experienced and is the strength of the offense overall.
Juniors Jim Cercek (6-2, 230) and Nathan Stasik (6-3, 225) anchor
the line. The Falcon offense is averaging 27 points per

trick plays that Field frequently runs, most recently a 90-yard
halfback pass for a touchdown in last week's game.
The
Falcon defense, while inconsistent at times, is a solid group
and can frustrate opposing offenses. The linebackers are
fundamentally sound, led by Boosinger, along with senior Zack
Moore (6-0, 210). The defensive line gets good pressure
on the quarterback, spearheaded by senior defensive end Michael
Reis (5-9, 180). Polasky leads the defensive backfield.

Buckeye game in the second round of the Playoffs.
October
29: Bishop Watterson Preview
October
30, 2009 7:30pm
Mike Hagely Field

OHSAA
Division: III
Nickname: Eagles
Conference: Central Catholic League
Offensive Formation: Multiple (Wing-T)
Defensive Set: 3-4-4
2009 Record: 7-2
Record Vs Mooney: 1-5
Previous Meeting: 2008 (CM-28 BW-0)
Head Coach: Dan Bjelac (61-23 in 7th season at CBW)
OHSAA State Champions:
2002 (Div III)
The
final regular season game for the Mooney Cardinals this season will
be on the road against Bishop Watterson of Columbus. The Eagles
are currently 7-2 on the season and has clinched a playoff berth in
Division III, Region 10. Last season was the fifth meeting between
the schools, with Mooney defeating the Eagles by a score of 28-0.
The common opponents include St. Vincent-St. Mary, whom the
Eagles defeated in week 1 by a count of 21-7, Cleveland Benedictine,
whom the Eagles defeated 28-10 in week 5, and St. Francis DeSales,
who defeated Watterson by a score of 17-10. The other loss was
to 7-2 Winton Woods in week 4 by a score of 19-13 in overtime.
In their most recent game, Watterson defeated parochial rival St.
Charles by a score of 20-0.
The
Eagles offense is senior-laden and very experienced, led by senior
QB Greg Hock (6-1, 175), who has passed for over 800 yards and nine
touchdowns. Senior running back Mark Theado (6-1, 225) accounts
for a bulk of the carries and has over 700 yards on the year.
Joining him in the Eagles' multi-back sets is junior Matt Redfield
(6-0, 205) who is very quick and powerful, rushing for seven touchdowns
on the year. The offensive line is very experienced and blocks
extremely well. Seniors Kurt May (6-5, 315), Craig Freeman
(6-1, 275) and Andrew Beuning (6-3, 220) anchor the line.
Junior wide receiver Colin Geraghty (6-2, 180) has excellent hands
and is the deep threat on the team, averaging nearly 30 yards per
reception. Senior wideout Marc Elberson is a good route runner
and runs well after the catch. Theado also catches many balls
out of the backfield. The Watterson offense is averaging 18
points per game.
The
Eagle defense lines up mainly in an even set, with linebackers generally
stacked behind the defensive linemen. The defensive front has
had success slowing down teams with excellent running games, led by
junior DT Kevin Shubitowski (5-11, 241). The linebackers are
quick and excel at stuffing runs up the middle. Junior Ray Cook
(6-1, 190) and Redfield lead the team in tackles. The defensive
backfield is the strength of the defense, led by outstanding senior
Dominic Clegg (5-11, 185) who has nine interceptions this season.
Clegg is a ball hawk who has a lightning quick break on the ball.
Senior DBs PJ Malagis (5-9, 180) and junior Brad McCurdy (5-9, 165)
are experienced and provide good run support and are fundamentally
sound. The Watterson defense is giving up an average of 12
points per game.
Special
teams are led by senior punter/kicker Dorain Gabrek (5-10, 180),
who has good range on his kicks. He also is the primary punt
and kick returner. Based on previous games at Mike Hagley
Field, the amount of rain we have received recently coupled with
a natural surface that has seen several games this season, could
make for less than ideal conditions Friday night.
As
in previous seasons, Columbus area Mooney alumni will be hosting
a pre-game and post-game party at Patrick J's, which is approximately
a 8-10 minute walk from Hagley Field. The address for
Patrick J's is 2711 North High Street. Pizza and appetizers
will be served. Past years' turnouts have been outstanding.
Those planning on going to Patrick J's before the game should
park at Hagley Field and walk down East Arcadia Avenue in order
to be caught in traffic closer to game time. The map
below should make things easier to understand:

The
annual Mooney-Ursuline game happens this Friday evening at YSU's Stambaugh
Stadium. Mooney will be the home team. The Irish are the
defending Division V State Champions and enter this game with a 5-2
record and are ranked #14 in the Division V AP Poll. The most
recent game for the Irish was against Akron Buchtel, where Ursuline
won by a score of 35-0. In games against common opponents, Ursuline
was defeated at Lake Catholic in week 3 by a score of 35-21.
The other Irish defeat was to Pittsburgh Central Catholic in week
2 by a score of 49-22.
The
Ursuline offense is very explosive and is led by junior quarterback
Paul Kempe, who has thrown for over 900 yards and has six touchdowns.
Senior quarterback Dawalyn Harper (6-1, 217) enters the game in certain
'wildcat-type' formations. Look for the Irish offense to run
the ball with seniors Allen Jones (5-11, 200) and Nico Irizzary (5-8,
190) who have combined for nearly 1,500 yards and 13 touchdowns.
Senior WR Chris Collins (5-9, 170) has excellent hands and knows how
to get open. Junior WR Akise Teague (5-8, 175) is the deep threat
with his outstanding speed. Irizzary is also an excellent receiver
out of the backfield. The offensive line is led by seniors Greg
DeMario (5-10, 195) and David Rossi (5-11, 210) along with junior
Pete Wearsch (6-1, 227). The Ursuline offensive line is adept
at pulling and trap blocking in their run schemes. The Irish
offense is scoring 38 points per game, scoring more than 42 points
on four occasions.
Defensively,
the Irish play sound defense, with many starters playing both ways.
The linebackers are led by junior Jeff Podolsky (5-7, 165).
The strength of the Irish defense is their backfield. They are
led by Harper, Teague and Irizzary. The Irish defense is giving
up an average of 20 points per game.
The
place kicker is Podolsky, while Kempe handles the punting duties.
Harper and Teague typically return kicks and are very elusive, getting
great blocks from their return teams. This game could come down
to execution on special teams being the difference maker.
The forecast for the game is a 70% chance of rain with high winds.
This
is the 55th meeting between the teams in the past 50 years.
Mooney leads the all-time series 35-16-3. This game is
always filled with lots of emotion from both sides. Alumni from
each school continue the spirit they had for this game during their
high school years. You will notice a large amount of people
travel from great distances away to attend this game. No matter
what the records are in any given year, this game has the highest
attendance of any game in the Mahoning Valley over the last 15 years!
The rallies, school decorations, etc. make for a fun week for the
students, and should make for an excellent game Friday night!
October
14: St. Vincent-St. Mary Preview
October
16, 2009 7:30pm
John Cistone Field

OHSAA Division: III
Conference: Independent
Offensive Formation: Multiple
Defensive Set: 5-2
2009 Record: 5-2
Record Vs Mooney: 1-16
Previous Meeting: 2008 (CM-33 STVM-7)
Head Coach: Dan Boarman (21-8 at STVM, 138-80 overall)
Ohio State Champions:
1972, 1981, 1982, 1988
Website: http://www.stvmfootball.com
The
Cardinals will take on the Irish of St. Vincent-St. Mary High School
this Friday evening at John Cistone Field in Akron, Ohio. The Irish
come into this game with an 5-2 record. Most recently, the Irish lost
to Walsh Jesuit by a score of 17-14. Walsh scored 11 points
in the final three minutes, kicking the winning field goal as time
expired.
Head Coach Dan Boarman is in his third season at his alma mater.
This Irish team returns several starters from last season, where they
finished 7-3 while narrowly missing the playoffs. Leading this
years' team at quarterback is junior Oliver Hildebrant (6-5, 210),
who moves well in the pocket and has a good frame for running between
the tackles on designed draw plays. The backfield has an excellent
combination of speed and power running. Junior Mark Murphy (6-2,
195) is a power runner while dynamic sophomore Sae'Von Fitzgerald
(5-7, 170) can outrun most defenders. The receivers are led
by junior Doran Grant (5-11, 175) who has also lined up at quarterback
depending on the package. Grant is an outstanding athlete who
is being recruited by the top college programs in the country.
He is possibly the most talented player we will have faced so far
this season. Senior Dominique Mitchell (5-11, 175) has
excellent hands and runs routes well. The offensive line is
led by senior tackle Bryant Ausperk (6-8, 305) who is a punishing
run blocker and is being recruited by several Division I schools.
Joining him are juniors Mitch Wassam (6-0, 275) and Carlos Lugo
(6-1, 250). The Irish offense is averaging 20 points per game.
Defensively,
the Irish front five is anchored by senior Ben Castrigano (6-3, 240)
and junior Freeland Oliverio (6-0, 230). The linebackers are
outstanding tacklers, using good fundamentals to prevent most runs
from getting to the second level. The senior trio at linebacker
includes Billy Harmon (6-0, 230), Brian Foster (6-1, 240), and Troy
Keener (5-10, 190). The defensive backfield is the strength
of the defense, with Grant being a lockdown cornerback typically placed
on the opposition's top receiver. He is joined by senior Mike
Kagafas, who has several interceptions on the year. The defense
is giving up an average of 12 points per game.
Special
teams feature Grant as the primary returner. He scored on a
59-yard punt return in the Walsh game this past weekend. The
kicking duites are handled by senior Dan Toth (5-20, 240).
In the Division III, Region 9 computer points, STVM is currently ranked
third behind Mooney and Poland. Obviously, this game will go
a long way in determining how Region 9 will end up. And, as
in years past, a rematch with the Irish is possible if both teams
qualify for the playoffs. The game is being broadcast on 570AM
WKBN and will also be webcast. You can listed to the webcast
by clicking HERE
or going to www.wkbn.com and clicking the 'Listen Live' button.

October
10, 2009 7:00pm
Bedford Stadium

OHSAA Division: III
Conference: Independent
Offensive Formation: Multiple
Defensive Set: Even
2009 Record: 1-5
Record Vs Mooney: 8-9
Previous Meeting: 2008 (CM-31 CB-14)
Head Coach: Art Bortnick (62-60 at Benedictine)
OSHAA State Champions:
1973, 1980, 1982, 1996, 2003, 2004
The Cleveland
Benedictine football program is one of the most storied in the state
of Ohio. Their program over time is very similar to Cardinal
Mooney's. This years team currently has a record of 1-5.
In week 6, they fell to Lakewood St. Edward by a score of 17-0.
This
season, the Bengals are led by senior RB Demetrius Banks (5-5, 200).
Unlike in years past, Benedictine is a more balanced team.
Junior Ty Wilcosky (5-10, 160) handles the duties at QB this season.
The main target in the passing game is sophomore wide receiver Michael
Roberts (6-4, 224) who typically has a height advantage over most
defenders. The offensive line blocks both run and pass well
and is anchored by senior center Adam Patterson (6-0, 250).
The Benedictine offense is averaging 13 points per game.
The
Benedictine defense lines up mainly in an even set, with the linebackers
being very active from sideline to sideline with good pursuit speed.
The defensive line is quick and is led by senior Joe Nawalaniec
(5-11, 243). Junior Jimmy Valentino (5-8, 181) is a linebacker
with good instincts for the ball. Seniors Shaun Davis (5-10,
152) and Tim Kendry (6-1, 181) lead the defensive backfield.
The Benedictine defense gives up an average of 22 points per game.
Benedictine,
as usual, has good special teams. After the graduation of
All-Ohio kicker Josh Steigerwald, the kicking falls to sophomore
Justin Bonchek (5-6, 165). Freshman William Woodson (5-9,
145) handles the return duties.
Mentor
Lake Catholic is a common opponent of both schools, with Benedictine
falling to the Cougars in week two by a score of 35-0. Also
a common opponent is Columbus Bishop Watterson, who defeated Benedictine
28-10 in week five. The game is being played at Bedford Stadium,
which is addressed at 481 Northfield Road, Bedford, Ohio.
September 30 - Saint Francis Preview
October
2, 2009 7:00pm
St. Francis Stadium
OHSAA
Division Equivalent: II
Location: Athol Springs, NY
Nickname: Red Raiders
Conference: Monsignor Martin AA
2009 Record: 2-2
Record Vs Mooney: 0-6
Previous Meeting: 2008 (CM-13 SF-0)
Head Coach: Jerry Smith (22nd Season)
The
Red Raiders of Buffalo St. Francis High School enter this game
with a 2-2 record. However, that record is deceiving as
St. Francis has played teams with a combined 14-3 record, most
recently losing to St. Ignatius (5-0 and ranked nationally) 30-14
this past weekend. They are averaging 21 points per game
on offense, while giving up an average of 25 points per game.
The
Red Raiders run a pass-first offense led by several talented players.
Senior QB Mike Chuchla (6-0, 175) has passed for seven touchdowns
while averaging just short of 200 yards passing per game.
His main receiving target is senior WR Roland Kerr (6-0, 185)
who has five touchdowns along with 230 yards receiving.
Another talented receiver is senior co-captain Adam Redden (6-1,
190) who leads the team in receiving yards and has excellent hands.
The backfield is led by senior Brandon McClain (5-7, 175) who
gets a majority of the carries. The offensive line is very
experienced, with four returning starters. Senior tackle
Patrick Reichart (6-5, 310) is getting several offers from Division
I colleges. The Red Raiders pass on approximately sixty
percent of their offensive plays.
The defense is led by senior DE Desmond Howard (6-3, 235) who
is very athletic for his size and can disrupt a play from anywhere
on the field. Sophomore Joseph Smith (5-11, 195) leads the
team with five sacks. The linebackers are more suited to
pass coverage than run defense, as St. Francis plays teams that
typically throw the ball. Consequently, the Red Raider defense
is allowing nearly 150 yards rushing per game. The defensive
backfield is led by Kerr and junior Nick Borghese (5-10, 165).
Borghese
performs the punting and kicking duties. Kerr is typically
the return man. St. Francis Stadium is a natural grass facility
and due to its proximity to Lake Erie, can be windy at times.
Early weather forecasts call for a 60% chance of rain and 55 degrees
along with 15mph winds! Directions to the stadium are available
HERE.
Simply input your starting address. The stadium is approximately
three hours from Youngstown.
September
24 - Lake Catholic Preview
September
25, 2009 7:30pm Stambaugh
Stadium
OHSAA Division: II
Nickname: Cougars
Conference: North Coast League (Blue)
Offensive Set: Multiple/Spread
Defensive Set: 3-4
2009 Record: 4-0
Record Vs Mooney: 2-9
Previous Meeting: 2008 (CM-35 MLC-14)
Head Coach: Mike Bell (8th year at Lake Catholic)
OHSAA State Champions: 1991, 1992, 2001
The
Cardinals will take on the Cougars of Mentor Lake Catholic Friday
at Stambaugh Stadium. The Cougars are currently undefeated
and ranked #2 in the state of Ohio in Division II, moving up from
Division III this season. They have outscored their opponents
by a total of 135-52. Lake Catholic returns an experienced
team from last season and has a balanced offensive attack and
a solid defense.
The offense, as stated previously, is multi-dimensional, however,
Lake Catholic prefers to run the ball. The main backfield
threat is junior Rich Sanders (5-9, 160) who has rushed for nearly
600 yards along with 9 touchdowns on the year. The quarterback
is senior Jerrod Ronyak (6-3, 205) who has over 600 yards passing,
five touchdowns, with only one interception. Ronyak is also
the second leading rusher on the team, averaging nearly six yards
per carry. The receivers are led by senior Zach Cvelbar
(6-1, 185) who has three touchdowns this season. The offensive
line is solid, not allowing a single sack this season.
Upon watching film of the Lake Catholic-Walsh Jesuit game, of
note is an adjustment the Cougars made at halftime. In the
first half, Walsh was frequently stacking the middle of the offense,
making it difficult for the Cougar running game to find any holes.
After halftime, Lake Catholic began running spread formations
with three or four wide receivers. Look for this adjustment
on Friday if Lake Catholic does not find success out of their
base sets.
Defensively,
the Cougars rely on quickness to swarm to the ball. The
defense has shown to bend but not break, giving up yards, but
not necessarily points. Junior Chase Hounsell (6-5, 235)
plays nose tackle in the Cougars' 3-4 defensive scheme and commands
a double team on nearly every play. The Cougar defense has
had seven interceptions this season and are allowing 13 points
per game against quality opponents.
The
placekicker is senior Jacob Lubbe (5-8, 170).
September
16 - Warren Harding Preview
September
18, 2009 7:30pm
Stambaugh Stadium

OHSAA Division: I
Conference: Independent
Offensive Formations: Multiple
Defensive Set: 4-3
2009 Record: 2-0-1
Record Vs Mooney: 9-13
Previous Meeting: 2008 (WGH-0 CM-17)
Head Coach: DJ Dota (Third Season, 11-11-1 overall)
Cardinal
Mooney will meet the Warren G. Harding Raiders this Friday night
in what could possibly be the last meeting between the two storied
programs for some time. Harding has recently joined the
Lake Erie League. Warren Harding enters this game with a
2-0-1 record, defeating Chaney and Akron Buchtel and playing East
Cleveland Shaw to a 24-24 tie that was called due to lightning
in week 1. The Raiders are coming off a 5-5 season in 2008.
The
Raiders are running a spread offense with senior Jordan Miller
(6-0, 200) at quarterback. Miller has played extremely well
in his first season at Harding, as he played at LaBrae last season.
He has averaged near 150 yards passing each game and has
five touchdowns so far this season. he is also a threat
to run out of the spread if his receivers are covered. He
is averaging around 60 yards rushing per game. Miller has
several Division I college scholarship offers. In addition
to Miller filling the stat line each week, he is surrounded with
excellent speed and quickness at the skill positions. Senior
running back Michael Dorsey (6-3, 210) (committed to West Virginia)
gets the majority of the carries and runs hard between the tackles.
The receivers are led by seniors DJ Williamson (6-2, 190) (who
has committed to Michigan), Andrew Zitnick (5-10, 170) and Deen
Franklin (5-9, 155). Senior tight end Marvin Logan (6-2,
215) has made big plays this season on deep crossing routes.
Harding is averaging 40 points per game on offense.
Defensively,
Warren Harding lines up in a 4-3 formation, with many experienced
players across the board. The defense has been stellar this
season. In their two most recent games versus Chaney and
Akron Buchtel, the Raider defense has allowed 110 total yards
in both games combined! Harding is giving up an average
of 13 points per game.
Special
teams are led by kicker Moses Sosa-Reyes (5-9, 160). Williamson
handles the kickoff return duties.
The
Raiders are coached by D.J. Dota, who is in his third season at
Harding. He has an overall record of 11-11-1.

Defensive Set: 4-3
2009 Record: 2-0
2008 Record: 6-4
Record Vs Mooney: 0-2

The
Cardinals will face the Elyria Catholic Panthers this Friday evening
at Knights of Columbus Field in Elyria, Ohio. The Panthers enter
the game with a 2-0 record, with wins coming over Cleveland Collinwood
by a score of 35-0 and Lorain Southview by a score of 42-13. Mooney
played Elyria Catholic last season for the second time, winning
by a score of 59-14. The Panthers are members of the North Coast
Conference and are coached by Ben Malbasa who is in his third
season at Elyria Catholic.
The
Panthers run a spread offense with good-sized offensive linemen.
They are primarily a running team, but posses an efficient passing
game. The strength of the offense lies in many of the skill players
from last season, while the offensive line has mixed levels of
experience, with two sophomores starting. The Panther offense
is led by junior quarterback Danny Reaser (6-2, 185) who had a
breakout season as a sophomore last year. He is an excellent
runner and and an accurate passer who throws well on the run.
The Panther backfield divides carries between several backs,
with senior tailback Alex Alicea (6-0, 195) being the main threat.
He gained nearly 150 yards against Southview, scoring four
touchdowns, after sitting out the Collinwood game. The receivers
are tall and athletic and include and junior tight end Conor Voreis
(6-4, 215).
The
Panther defense has given up 13 points this season yielding an
average of 155 yards per game. Elyria Catholic uses a platoon
system, and is one of few Division IV schools that have two separate
units. The defensive backfield is led by senior Adam
Kirsch (6-1, 195), who is an excellent defender. The defensive
line is led by senior Josh Russ (6-5, 210) who is a Division I
recruit. The linebacking group is quick and swarms to the
ball.
Elyria
Catholic is a storied, successful program that has won three OHSAA
State Championships. They are a well-disciplined team running
a spread offense with excellent athletes. More details are
available on the Panther football program at their excellent website,
www.ecpantherfootball.com.
Game time is 7:00pm.

31 - St. Francis DeSales Preview
September 4, 2009
7:30pm Stambaugh Stadium
OHSAA Division: III
Conference: Columbus Central Catholic - Silver
Offensive Formation: Multiple (pro, wing)
Defensive Set: 4-3
2009 Record: 1-0
2008 Record: 13-1
Record Vs Mooney: First Meeting
Head Coach: Ryan Wiggins (26-2 at DeSales, 30-8 overall)
OHSAA State
Finalist: 1984, 1990, 1996, 2001 and 2005
OHSAA
State Champions: 1985, 1997 and 1998
The
Cardinals will host a new opponent this Friday, the Stallions
of St. Francis DeSales High School, located in Columbus, Ohio.
Last week, DeSales won its opening game versus Gahanna Lincoln
by a score of 38-0. In 2008, DeSales finished the season
with a record of 13-1, losing in the Division III State Semifinals
to Cincinnati Anderson. DeSales has not lost a regular
season contest since 2006. Head Coach Ryan Wiggins is
in his third season at his alma mater. In 2006, he was
the Head Coach at Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary, thus having familiarity
with Mooney to some extent.
The
DeSales offense is geared toward the run, with frequent option
plays being called. A group of agile lineman clears the way for
a group of talented backs, each with a different running style.
The backfield is led by seniors Adam Griffin (5-9, 180) (son of
OSU great Archie Griffin) and Robert Perrine (6-0, 190).
Griffin is a better outside runner while Perrine can work between
the tackles. Griffin did not play in the opening game due
to an injury. Both running backs are more than capable to
turn a run up the middle into a long touchdown. The quarterback
is senior Mitch Herbert (6-0, 170) who runs the option very well.
The offensive line is the strength of the DeSales offense, with
senior guard Alex Vance (6-4, 225) and senior tackle Travis Jackson
(6-5, 265) heading up a group of agile, athletic linemen.
DeSales uses a wing formation and frequently runs misdirection
plays utilizing the wingback, who is sophomore Warren Ball (6-0,
180).
The
defensive unit of DeSales could possibly be one of the best
in the state. Several Division I recruits can be found
on all levels of the defense. Anchoring the line is Jackson
(who has committed to a Big Ten school), along with junior defensive
end Chris Rock (6-5, 245), who in the opener versus Gahanna,
was virtually unblockable. The linebackers are led
by seniors Evan Killilea (6-0, 200) and Chi Chi Ariguzo (6-3,
205). They move well in pursuit as well as stay disciplined
when the situation calls for it. Griffin is the most experienced
member of the Stallions defensive backfield.
Special teams are a source of pride for the DeSales football
program, and it shows. They have no glaring weakness in
special teams. Senior kicker Kyle Nugent has an accurate
leg and has good range. The return game is also excellent
with Killilea nearly scoring on a punt return last week.
August
24 - Boardman Preview
August 28, 2009
7:00pm Spartan Stadium
OHSAA Division: I
Conference: Federal League
Offensive Formation: Multiple Shotgun
Defensive Set: 4-3
2008 Record: 5-5
Record Vs Mooney: 15-20
Previous Meeting: 2003 (CM-14 Boardman-7)
Head Coach: DJ Ogilvie (17-35 at Boardman, 53-59 overall)
Ohio Division
I State Finalist: 1987
The
Cardinals will take on the Boardman Spartans this Friday evening
at Spartan Stadium in the season opener for both teams.
The two former Steel Valley Conference rivals have not met since
2003, when Boardman left the SVC and joined the Federal League.
Mooney holds the all time edge by a small margin of 20-15.
In 2008, Boardman finished the season with a record of 5-5, with
a 2-5 conference record in the Federal League. This years'
team returns 19 lettermen with many having a good amount of varsity
experience.
Head Coach DJ Ogilvie is in his sixth season at his alma mater.
The Spartan offense is pass-oriented, mixing runs in with a very
efficient passing game. Running plays from several sets
and leading the offense is senior quarterback Rob Boyd (6-2, 200).
Boyd is a strong-armed quarterback who is comfortable in the shotgun
formation. He has great arm strength and throws very well
down field and over the middle on post patterns. His favorite
target this year will be senior WR Chase Hammond (6-5, 200).
Hammond will have a height advantage over most defensive backs
and has very reliable hands. He sat out nearly the entire
2008 season with an ankle injury. The offensive line was
hit hard by graduation and is an area where underclassmen will
have to fill in the gaps. The Spartan running game will
be multifaceted and feature junior Tyler Walls (5-9, 175) who
was last seasons' leading rusher.
Defensively,
the Spartans are led by senior DE J.T. Moore (6-3, 230), who tallied
over 70 tackles as a junior, and is the team leader this season.
Moore has committed to play football at Ohio State. Likely
anchoring the linebackers will be senior Ryan Phillis (6-3, 225),
who played at United last season while tallying 140 tackles.
Phillis has committed to play for the Indiana Hoosiers in college.
Phillis is very strong and posses good instincts in shedding blockers
and reading the play. The defensive backfield is led by
Hammond, who is also a polished defender. Special teams
will be an area where experienced players return. Kicker
Trevor Ragen has good range and an accurate leg.

8 - Locker Room Renovations
In
addition to the updates mentioned on the front page, the following
improvements were made on the locker room: stone/epoxy floor surface,
upgraded lighting, and ceramic tile walls in the shower and bathroom
areas. However, in a nod to the deep-rooted tradition of
the school, the steps leading from the locker room to the practice
field have not been touched in any way. They remain heavily
scratched and chipped from thousands of Mooney players over the
years. Additional photos are below:
